UN Advises Against Travel To Parts Of China
SARS Outbreak Makes Travel To Affected Areas Risky

GENEVA -- The World Health Organization is advising travelers to stay away from Hong Kong and a southern Chinese province at the center of the SARS outbreak.

A WHO advisory released Wednesday recommended that "persons traveling to Hong Kong and Guangdong Province of China consider postponing all but essential travel."

SARS -- or severe acute respiratory syndrome -- is the highly contagious respiratory illness blamed in at least 75 deaths around the world. Most of them have been in China.

The UN health agency says it knows of nine foreign businessmen who caught SARS in Hong Kong and returned with it to their own countries.

WHO's infectious diseases chief says this is the first time that the agency has advised people to avoid a specific area because of an ailment for which there is no vaccine or drug.
